Guwahati: Assamese filmmaker Rima Das will serve on the three-person jury for the New Currents Award at the 31st Busan International Film Festival. She joins Korean actor Shim Eun-kyung and Chinese producer Shan Zuolong to judge the competition, which highlights emerging Asian talent. The top honor comes with a cash prize of 20 million Korean won, or about 14,719 USD.
The festival runs from October 6 to 15 at the Busan Cinema Center and various city venues. Das maintains a long history with the event. Her past features include Bulbul Can Sing and Tora’s Husband, while her recent work, Village Rockstars 2, won the Kim Jiseok Award for Best Film in 2024.
Das returns this year with her latest film, Not a Hero, which holds its Asian premiere during the festival. Her upcoming project, Malati, My Love, also appeared at the festival’s Asian Project Market. “Busan has been a very special part of my journey as a filmmaker. I have come here with my films, met audiences and filmmakers, and experienced the festival from different perspectives. To now return as a juror feels deeply meaningful,” Das said.
Her fellow jurors bring significant industry experience. Shim Eun-kyung is known for roles in Sunny and The Journalist. Shan Zuolong has produced films screened at major festivals including Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.
