Guwahati: Assamese filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky is taking his dark comedy Moi Eti Nixhasor to the Trujillo International Independent Film Festival in Peru. The film tracks the life of Koduwa, a clever village thief navigating social unrest and prejudice with humor. It relies on compassion to tackle tough political realities in Assam.
The project just landed a nomination in the Cinejoy Viewers Voice feature film competition based in San Jose, California. This event lets audience members pick the winners instead of industry gatekeepers, and it runs in partnership with the Conquest Film Festival. Kotoky, a National Award-winning filmmaker, expressed his pride regarding the international selection. He said, "The selection for the upcoming festival in Peru was a proud achievement for the entire team behind the film."
Accolades are piling up for the movie. It recently grabbed three awards at the IndieFEST Film Awards in California and the Crown Point International Film Festival in Chicago. The production previously won Best Dark Comedy and Best Editor at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival 2026. It also earned an Award of Excellence Special Mention at the Accolade Global Film Competition in the United States.
Theatre actor Gunomoni Baruah plays the lead. A cast of established and emerging Assamese talent fills out the supporting roles. The screenplay is based on a true story written by senior journalist Anuradha Sharma Pujari. The National Film Development Corporation produced the movie alongside the Red River and Blue Hills production house. The film ultimately aims to leave viewers wondering about the true identity of the real thief.
