Imphal: Violence has erupted across Manipur's hill districts following the murder of a Naga civilian, leading to a deadly gunfight on Tuesday. A suspected Kuki militant, identified as 50-year-old Haogin Lhouvum, died during an armed confrontation between rival groups near Lasan and Makui villages.
Security forces were deployed to the area under the Chalwa Police Station after intermittent gunfire persisted until the afternoon. Officials have since launched extensive search operations to restore order in the region.
This escalation follows the killing of 57-year-old Chunjanglung Panmei, who was ambushed on June 8 while gathering firewood and repairing water pipelines near Pongringlong Part-2 village. His body was recovered with multiple bullet wounds.
Following legal formalities at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, Panmei’s remains were returned to his family. A large crowd gathered at the Tupul Playground for a final service organized by local tribal leaders. Addressing the community during the memorial, the Joint Tribes' Council expressed the collective grief of the region as they mourned the loss. Hundreds attended the funeral rites before Panmei was laid to rest.
