Gangtok: A camera trap snapped a Eurasian Lynx in the high-altitude Tso Lhamo plateau of Mangan District this January. This is the first time the cat has been recorded in Sikkim. It marks only the second photographic confirmation of the species in the entire Eastern Himalayan range.

The discovery occurred at 5,250 meters during a wildlife survey. The Sikkim Forest and Environment Department teamed up with WWF-India to monitor local snow leopard populations. Experts say the record proves that these high-altitude habitats remain vital for rare animals. Conservation efforts must continue.

The survey turned up more than just the lynx. Researchers found snow leopards, Pallas's cats, Tibetan wolves, and Tibetan sand foxes. They also spotted Tibetan gazelles and argali. These findings highlight the biodiversity of the cold desert ecosystem. Officials stated that the finding "adds to scientific understanding of species distribution across the Eastern Himalayas and highlights the ecological importance of Sikkim's high-altitude habitats."

This data will guide future research. It pushes the need for strict habitat protection in these fragile mountain zones.
