Shillong: Meghalaya Police have arrested a man from Rajasthan for allegedly impersonating a high-ranking police official to defraud a victim. The suspect, identified as Jahul Ali from the Alwar district, created a fake social media profile using the identity of Deputy Inspector General Vivekanand Singh Rathore. The official currently oversees the western range and formerly served as the Superintendent of Police for the Ri-Bhoi district.

Authorities stated that the suspect used this fraudulent account to initiate contact with a victim in Meghalaya. Through this deception, he successfully convinced the individual to transfer money. Following the incident, the victim filed a formal complaint at the Nongpoh Police Station, prompting an investigation into the cyber fraud.

Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad confirmed that officers tracked Ali to Jaipur. He was taken into custody on May 23 after a period of technical surveillance and intelligence gathering. The police have registered a case against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. Officials say the investigation remains active as they continue to look into the details of the fraud.
