Shillong: Pynursla has officially transitioned to a democratic selection process for its headman, ending a 40-year tradition that restricted the role of Rangbah Shnong to specific clans. Balajied Syiem, the Syiem of Hima Khyrim, formalised the shift by presenting the appointment letter, known as a sanad, to Banteilang Thabah following his election on April 30.
The move follows years of advocacy from residents who argued that leadership should be based on public confidence rather than lineage. This struggle for change began in the mid-1980s and faced resistance from members of the Khongmawloh, Sohkhlet, and Khongthaw clans, who historically held the position under a 1989 ruling.
Three clans attempted to challenge the election results, alleging bias during the process. However, the dispute was settled during hearings on May 19 when supporters of Thabah presented signatures from more than 500 residents. In contrast, those opposing the change provided only about 60 signatures.
On May 26, the Syiem upheld the election results by referencing the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Act of 2024. This legislation mandates that a Rangbah Shnong must be an adult Khasi male and a village resident, but explicitly does not require affiliation with a specific clan. Reflecting on the significance of the change, one observer noted that "the collective will of the residents takes precedence over traditional lineage restrictions." This appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Pynursla as it prioritizes merit-based leadership.
