Protesters Maintain Highway Blockade Over Killings in Manipur

Imphal: A blockade on National Highway-2 in Manipur's Imphal West district reached its ninth day as local Liangmai Naga protesters continue to demand justice for six men killed last month. The protest, centered at Namdilong, began on June 5 following the discovery of the victims' bodies.

The six men were allegedly abducted by suspected Kuki armed groups on May 13, sparking weeks of uncertainty before their remains were recovered. In response, members of the community, led by the Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union, initiated the blockade to halt the flow of goods into Gamgiphai and Kangpokpi district.

Volunteers are currently monitoring the stretch of the highway to ensure compliance with the protest. While essential commodity transport remains blocked, demonstrators continue to allow emergency services and passenger vehicles to pass. Various Naga civil society organizations have staged a series of demonstrations to condemn the violence and demand increased security in the region. Reflecting the widespread anger throughout the state, local groups have demanded accountability for the perpetrators, stating that the "blockade forms part of a series of demonstrations held by various Naga civil society organisations demanding justice for the victims and action against those responsible for the killings."
