Imphal: Longjam Paliba M, Chairman of the insurgent group PREPAK (Progressive), issued a sharp critique of India's electoral system and Manipur's political leadership during the organization's 16th Progressive Day. Paliba paid tribute to those lost in the state's ongoing conflict and offered condolences to families impacted by the humanitarian crisis.
The insurgent leader alleged that democratic institutions in Manipur have failed to produce competent governance, characterizing the electoral process as a marketplace driven by money and corruption. He specifically questioned the credibility of the Election Commission of India and the use of Electronic Voting Machines, claiming these factors have fostered deep public distrust and damaged the country's democratic image.
Paliba accused elected representatives of acting as mere proxies for the Indian state and neglecting their accountability to constituents. He argued that colonial-era policies continue to marginalize indigenous communities, exacerbating social divisions rather than promoting cohesion. Furthermore, he claimed that the local political class has shown a lack of seriousness in addressing recent security incidents and violence.
Addressing broader themes, Paliba criticized India's stance on the conflict in Gaza and compared it to the current situation in Manipur. He also reiterated accusations against Kuki armed groups, alleging they carry out attacks against indigenous communities while asserting that the government has failed to provide adequate protection. Ultimately, he called for the younger generation to consolidate their efforts to secure a future for Manipur, suggesting that genuine progress remains impossible under the current political structure.
