Guwahati: Police in Assam's Bongaigaon district seized a vehicle loaded with 60 LPG cylinders following reports of illegal transportation. Local residents in the Kirtanpara market intercepted the truck on Thursday night, suspecting the cargo was intended for the black market, and alerted the Borghola Police to intervene.
The residents raised questions regarding why a large consignment originating from a gas agency in the Chirang district's Panbari area was being moved to an individual in Dumuria. According to local claims, the cylinders were meant for illicit sale, with local residents alleging "the cylinders may have been intended for sale in the black market, where LPG cylinders are reportedly sold at prices ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per cylinder."
This seizure occurred during a period of ongoing LPG shortages affecting both residential consumers and local commercial establishments like restaurants. While an investigation is now underway to determine the legitimacy of the transport and the intended destination of the gas, the situation remains tense. Additionally, local reporters claimed that police personnel blocked them from gathering information at the scene, though authorities have not yet provided a response to these allegations.
