Guwahati: Police in Assam’s Dhemaji district intercepted and seized a camel that had been transported from Rajasthan to Sissiborgaon. The animal became a public spectacle, drawing large crowds of curious residents as it arrived in the quiet locality ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha festival.
Authorities acted on a tip-off and discovered the camel was allegedly brought to the area by a local resident named Khan, who hails from Gelua. Preliminary reports indicate the animal was intended for ritual sacrifice. Following the intervention, police moved the camel to the Sissiborgaon station, where it remains under supervision while officials confirm the legality of its transport.
The investigation is currently focused on verifying the origin of the animal and ensuring all transport regulations were followed. Police are coordinating with wildlife experts to arrange for the proper relocation and welfare of the camel. This incident occurs during a period of state-wide discussion regarding animal sacrifices, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has previously asked community leaders to avoid cow slaughter to help preserve communal harmony.
