Shillong: Gunajit Kalita, a 42-year-old businessman from Assam, died following a bizarre series of events that began with his disappearance on June 30. Kalita, who owned a hardware store in Nalbari district, told his family he was heading out to get his car repaired and handle business tasks. He never came home.
His family lost contact with him that night when his phone went dead. Relatives later tracked his vehicle to a repair shop in Rangia, but the businessman remained missing for days. Meghalaya Police eventually found Kalita in a hotel in Byrnihat suffering from critical injuries.
Medics rushed him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for emergency care. He died the next morning. Eyewitnesses noted visible injuries on his body during the ordeal. "Eyewitnesses claimed that rope-like marks were visible around his neck," reported officials familiar with the scene.
Police from both Assam and Meghalaya are now working together to track his final movements. Investigators have yet to determine how he ended up in that hotel or who caused his injuries. The case remains open.
