Agartala: Police detained a Bangladeshi couple in Tripura’s South district on Thursday for sneaking into India without travel or identity papers. Authorities identified the pair as Santanu Debnath and his wife. They were pulled off a bus in the Debdaru area after intelligence reports flagged suspicious movement.
Officers questioned the pair after their stories did not add up. They could not show proof of legal entry or citizenship. "We intercepted the vehicle based on information received and questioned two passengers whose behaviour appeared suspicious. During verification, they failed to provide documents establishing their Indian citizenship," an officer at the Debdaru police outpost stated.
The couple admitted they were Bangladeshi nationals. They had two mobile phones and two SIM cards from Bangladesh when police searched them. Debnath claimed he hails from the Chittagong region. He told investigators they crossed an unfenced section of the border looking for work.
The duo allegedly entered through the Gomati district before moving south. Police are now mapping their path. They want to know if local smugglers or networks helped the couple move across the region. A formal case is now open, and officials are pushing ahead with legal proceedings for illegal entry.
