Guwahati: Tinsukia police intercepted two trucks at the Doomdooma Bypass late Wednesday night. They rescued 74 head of cattle during the operation. Authorities moved in after local reports of theft from the Kakopathar and Phillobari areas. Police set up a checkpoint at Raidang Bypass around 11:30 pm to snare the smugglers.

Officers arrested three men at the scene. Faruk Khan and Sahil Babu reside in Doomdooma 8 No. area. The third suspect, Barsat Panikar, drove one of the trucks. Investigators found no valid transportation documents for the livestock. The trucks, bearing registration numbers AS-23 DC-6368 and AS-01 SC-2586, were seized.

Co-District Superintendent of Police Diganta Dutta confirmed other members of the smuggling ring fled the area. "Some suspects managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Search operations are underway. They too will face legal action," Dutta said. Police believe a wider organized network controls the theft and transit of the animals.

Volunteers from the Doomdooma Regional Students' Union and local residents helped provide water and care for the rescued animals at the Doomdooma Town Public Playground. Officers are still tracking the source and final destination of the cattle. The investigation remains active.
