Shillong: Delhi Police arrested labor contractor Sanoj in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday following the collapse of the Hostel Daze building. He is currently headed to Delhi for questioning regarding the site. Sanoj told police that workers were clearing waste from the basement floor due to recent rains while expanding the ground floor for commercial use when the structure failed.
The five-storey building fell around 1:30 p.m. last Sunday near Delhi University’s South Campus. Seven people died. Urmila, 75, and her husband Hariram, 81, now face 14 days of judicial custody. Their son Mahesh, who managed the property, remains in police custody for two days. The owners leased the site to the PG operators in August 2025.
Authorities are clearing out. Delhi Fire Service personnel are removing student belongings from the site. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to take down the neighboring structure to prevent further disasters.
The Chief Minister’s Office released a statement on X regarding the nearby hazard: "On the instructions of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been directed to demolish the dilapidated building adjoining the accident site in the interest of public safety."
Officials already suspended five civic workers. These employees failed to stop illegal construction in the Dhaula Kuan colony. The investigation continues.
