NSWON Criticizes Assam Rifles for Alleged Crackdown on Protesting Women

Imphal: The National Socialist Women’s Organisation of Nagalim (NSWON) issued a statement condemning the alleged use of force by the Assam Rifles against Tangkhul Naga women. The incident occurred on June 7 during a protest in Shokvao, located in the Ukhrul district.

According to the NSWON, personnel from the 40 Assam Rifles, under the leadership of Colonel Sunil Singh Lunthi, entered regions managed by Naga customary institutions. The organization claimed this entry represented an unlawful intrusion, prompting the women to hold a peaceful demonstration to defend their local customs and rights.

Regarding the nature of the protest, the statement noted, "Their assembly was not an act of confrontation but a lawful, peaceful assertion of accountability, dignity and respect for customary jurisdiction." The group argued that the security forces disregarded established protocols, which could exacerbate tensions between the Assam Rifles and local Naga communities.

The NSWON has requested a transparent and independent investigation into the confrontation. They called for accountability for any excesses committed during the event and urged security forces to practice restraint and respect the historical and cultural realities of the area. Additionally, the organization expressed its ongoing support for the women of Shokvao and the broader protection of Naga rights.
