Northeast groups push to restart Chennai-Dimapur train service

Kohima: A delegation from the North East India Welfare Association and the Naga Christian Fellowship met with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on July 3. They asked him to bring back the Chennai to Dimapur train service. The route went dark back in 2020 when the pandemic hit. It has not returned since.

The group met the Governor at Lok Bhavan. They told him the train was a lifeline for students, patients, and business owners. It linked Tamil Nadu to Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur. Now, no trains run direct from Chennai to Dimapur. Travelers face long trips and steep costs. The loss of the line makes life hard for families, the elderly, and anyone hauling heavy bags.

Governor Arlekar promised to talk to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about the gap in service. He told the group he would push for a fix. Wapangtoshi, the group leader, said the meeting left them feeling optimistic. "The Governor's assurance to pursue the matter has renewed hope among the people of the Northeast residing in Tamil Nadu and those who regularly travel between Tamil Nadu and the Northeastern States," he said.

The community is waiting for news. They want the line back to help thousands of passengers. They believe restoring the route will mend old ties between the regions.
