Shillong: Northeast church leaders are heading to New Delhi to push back against changes to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. The government expects a face-to-face meeting with the Union Home Secretary in the next 10 to 14 days. State officials are now waiting on a formal invite to lock in the date.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the summit will give the Centre a chance to explain the new rules. The Home Secretary will hear specific grievances from the clergy and outline the government's stance. The move follows a sit-down between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a delegation of regional church representatives.
The group previously handed over a memorandum detailing their fears regarding the tightened oversight. Sangma noted that the Home Minister promised to review their points, saying, "the points raised would be examined and a detailed response would be provided." Both sides now wait to see if the dialogue clears the air.
