Itanagar: The nomination process for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Arunachal Pradesh officially started on June 1 following a notification from the Election Commission. Officials confirmed that June 8 is the deadline for filing nominations, with scrutiny set for June 9 and a withdrawal window open until June 11. If a vote is necessary, polling will take place on June 18, the same day as the vote count.
This election comes as the term of the current Rajya Sabha member, Nabam Rebia, expires on June 23. The seat is part of a broader national election cycle involving 27 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states.
Competition for the party ticket is intense, with 14 applicants vying for the ruling BJP nomination. The list of potential candidates includes Environment and Forest Minister Wangki Lowang, incumbent Nabam Rebia, Pasighat West MLA Ninong Ering, and former ministers Taba Tedir and Tage Taki. Former state BJP president Tai Tagak and Tangor Tapak are also seeking the nomination.
Despite the high number of hopefuls, the BJP has not yet chosen a candidate. Party sources expect the Parliamentary Board to meet soon to finalize the decision. Given the BJP maintains a significant majority in the 60-member state assembly, its eventual nominee is expected to win the seat easily.
