Kohima: A delegation of artisans from Noklak district and across the Northeast recently met with President Droupadi Murmu to highlight the region's rich artistic heritage. The group, which included a design team from Woven Threads, shared their experiences regarding the special At Home reception held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 26, 2026.
This initiative brought together designers, entrepreneurs, and weavers to showcase traditional craftsmanship and contemporary practices from all eight Northeastern states. The project featured an 80-member delegation, largely consisting of women from remote areas. For many of these artisans, the trip to the national capital represented their first time traveling outside of their home states.
During the visit, the Noklak group presented a Presidential gift from Nagaland featuring handcrafted home textiles. These items were created using traditional Ehlon niu fibres, which consist of stinging nettle and orange wild rhea fibres. The collection was supported by the Canvas Home Small Grants initiative.
The collaborative project received technical guidance from the National Institute of Design and involved support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. Several high-ranking officials oversaw the initiative, including Piyush Goyal, Jitin Prasada, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Sukanta Majumdar.
