Shillong: A proposed road connection between Mawsynram and Sohra could reshape tourism in Meghalaya by creating a direct link between two of the state's most popular destinations. UDP MLA Olan Sing Suin believes the project, which includes a bridge over the Umiam River, will simplify travel and establish an integrated tourism circuit. This route would connect Sohra's famous caves and living root bridges with the upcoming rain museum in Mawsynram.

Construction is already advancing from both sides of the river. Crews are working on a road from Dewsaw to the Umiam River banks, while another stretch is being developed from Nongwar toward Phali on the Sohra side. Once bridged, this corridor will provide a much shorter alternative to existing paths that currently loop through the southern and western parts of the state.

The regional infrastructure push extends beyond this specific link. Several World Bank-funded projects are moving ahead, including work on the Phlangwanbroi-Ranikor road. Olan Sing Suin noted that other segments are also advancing toward completion, stating, "The Welloi to Phlangwanbroi stretch is currently under tendering, and the process is expected to be completed by June. There is no doubt this project will be finished within 1-2 years."

Suin recently discussed the strategic importance of these developments with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. Local officials expect these improvements to provide a major boost to the economy by making the region more accessible to visitors. By reducing travel times and improving road conditions, the government aims to encourage a higher volume of tourists to explore these scenic areas.
