Kohima: The newly formed Kohima Traders Association has launched a campaign against the rising burden of illegal taxation in the city. Representing 15 local traders unions, the organization declared it will no longer tolerate the unauthorized financial demands that have plagued business owners for years. KTA president Ruokuohetuo Mechiilho noted that more than 35 groups are currently forcing local merchants to pay regular, itemized levies that threaten their survival.
Standing by the principle of One Government, One Tax, the association aims to curb these coercive collections. The KTA, established in March 2026, intends to advocate for ethical trade practices while opposing monopolies, price-fixing, and the forced sale of goods like lottery tickets or calendars. The group emphasized that it is not in conflict with the government or the Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industry, but exists specifically to safeguard traders who are already struggling to maintain their businesses.
To ensure accountability, the KTA plans to enforce a strict code of conduct. If a grievance arises, the association will first consult the respective registered union before stepping in to provide further support. By promoting fair competition and legal compliance, the KTA hopes to shield local merchants from syndicate activities and ensure a more stable environment for commerce in Kohima.
