Imphal: A new civil organization called the Native Peoples’ Committee, Manipur has been established to represent the interests of the Meitei and Naga communities. Formed during a meeting in Imphal, the committee aims to serve as a unified platform for protecting the land, rights, and identities of the native populations. This effort stems from discussions held on May 21 regarding the shared challenges facing the region.

The group appointed Ashang Kasar as convener, supported by co-conveners Ph. Deban and Dr. L. Phaomei. To ensure balance, the leadership team will maintain equal representation from both the Meitei and Naga communities. The committee plans to pursue its goals through peaceful, constitutional methods, emphasizing the need to defend against internal divisions and external pressures.

Looking ahead, the group scheduled a public convention for June 2, 2026, at Makhan village. The committee has also outlined several policy demands, including the removal of Assam Rifles from the state and the cancellation of the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militants. Additionally, members are calling for the immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens in Manipur.
