Kohima: A new Early Intervention Centre has been officially inaugurated at the Bumblebee Inclusive School in Kohima. The facility aims to support children living with developmental disabilities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy, by offering a range of integrated services including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, special education, and professional counselling. The centre will also extend its reach through Community-Based Rehabilitation, providing vital home-based care for families in need.
Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, the MLA who inaugurated the centre, praised the staff for their extraordinary dedication and patience. He noted that the milestones achieved at such an institution, while perhaps quiet to the outside world, represent profound progress for families. Dr. Rhütso pledged his continued support for these initiatives, inviting parents and educators to bring their concerns and policy suggestions directly to the legislative level to improve government welfare implementation.
During the event, Dr. Sao Tunyi shared his personal journey as a parent, detailing the challenges of navigating an autism diagnosis in a region where specialized support was historically scarce. He highlighted the necessity of professional intervention over solely prayer-based approaches, noting that the new centre provides not only physical therapies but also a non-judgmental environment for families. He emphasized that early intervention is a long-term commitment that requires consistency, calling for better access to disability resources across Nagaland.
