Shillong: The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has called on university officials to accelerate preparations for the fourth-year undergraduate program mandated by the National Education Policy 2020. NEHUSU president Menlamlynti Markhap emphasized that students must complete their third year and earn 120 academic credits to qualify for the additional year.
To avoid academic uncertainty, the union proposed that the Academic Council immediately form a committee to design the syllabus and establish rules for the upcoming one-year postgraduate course. Markhap presented this request to Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sumarbin Umdor, expressing optimism that a new Vice-Chancellor will help finalize these essential reforms.
The union also highlighted potential obstacles for affiliated colleges, specifically the requirement that institutions must employ at least two PhD-qualified faculty members to supervise research components. Markhap noted that many colleges currently lack sufficient qualified staff and urged the university to prioritize recruitment to meet these standards.
NEHUSU maintains that the NEP framework aims to provide students with more inclusive and flexible pathways, including internships and skill-based training. Union leaders assured the student body that they are working closely with the university to prevent any disruptions during the transition.
