NEHU Staff Association Welcomes Search for New Vice-Chancellor

Shillong: The North-Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) has officially welcomed the government's recent advertisement to recruit a new Vice-Chancellor for the institution. In a letter sent to the Ministry of Education, the staff body described the move as a vital step toward resolving the long-standing leadership crisis currently affecting the Shillong campus.

NEHUNSA general secretary Danny M. Synnah stated that the search for a successor was overdue. He blamed incumbent Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla for the university's instability, noting that his decision to manage academic and administrative affairs remotely from outside the headquarters has severely damaged the institution.

The association is calling for a transparent selection process to ensure the next leader possesses strong credentials in both academic and administrative fields. They have requested that the appointment be finalized before August 2026 to prevent a leadership gap. If a successor is not in place by the end of Prof. Shukla's term, the union insists that the senior-most professor should serve as the acting head in accordance with university statutes.

Warning against any potential extension of Prof. Shukla’s tenure, the union emphasized that such a move would cause further harm to the university. Copies of their formal request have been shared with key stakeholders, including the Meghalaya Chief Minister and the Union Minister of Education.
