Guwahati: Nagaon district authorities have shut down the Wish Welfare Foundation rehabilitation centre following an investigation into reports of mismanagement and abuse. The closure occurred after a joint operation by the District Social Welfare Department and local officials confirmed the facility failed to meet mandatory state guidelines and standard operating procedures.

This enforcement action follows media reports alleging that patients at the centre were subjected to inhumane punishment. Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma ordered the crackdown after inspectors found the facility was operating without regard for official norms. Police have arrested three people in connection with the irregularities, although the owner of the centre currently remains at large.

This is the third facility in the district to face such closure as authorities intensify their oversight of rehabilitation services. Regarding the broader crackdown on these facilities, officials confirmed, "The Nagaon district administration has so far sealed three rehabilitation centres in the district amid scrutiny over their functioning and compliance with regulatory requirements."
