Kohima: The All Nagaland College Students Union has announced a statewide Black Friday protest for June 19 to address the stalled construction of a 100-bed girls hostel at Kohima Science College. Students across the region will hoist black flags at their respective campuses to signal their dissatisfaction with the government regarding the long-pending project.
This escalation follows the expiration of a 20-day ultimatum issued by the union. Although the organization received verbal assurances from the relevant department that allocated funds for the project remain secure and will not lapse, progress has ground to a halt due to administrative hurdles. According to union officials, the department is prepared to begin construction but awaits formal clearance from the Office of the Chief Minister, who also manages the Finance Department.
Assistant General Secretary Imnawabang Longkumer stated, "The department is ready, but the approval is yet to come. We demand transparency and a written resolution." While the department requested an additional week to secure the required directive, the lack of a written commitment prompted the student body to initiate the protest. General Secretary Sotilo Tep emphasized that the issue represents a broader concern for the state, noting, "When education is delayed, dreams are delayed. When girls are neglected, society is weakened." The union has warned that failure to resolve the delay will result in a second phase of more widespread agitation.
