Nagaland Official Warns Against False Information for Census 2027

Kohima: Nagaland Census Operations Director Dr. Kenie Miachieo has issued a reminder that providing false information during the upcoming Census 2027 is a punishable offense under the Census Act of 1948. The warning comes as the state begins its data collection process, with officials relying on public cooperation to ensure the accuracy of the exercise.

Self-enumeration for the census began in Nagaland on June 16 and will remain open until June 30. Early participation has seen roughly 400 entries submitted as of the afternoon of the launch date. Following this period, the state will move into the House Listing operation, scheduled to take place throughout July.

Dr. Miachieo emphasized that individual privacy remains a priority throughout the digital transition. He stated, "Individual information collected during the Census is kept confidential under Section 15 of the Census Act and that the exercise is conducted in collaboration with State Governments and Union Territories."

Census 2027 marks the 16th national census and the eighth since India achieved independence. The government is shifting toward a digital-first approach, utilizing a mobile application for data collection and a web portal for management. House Listing Blocks are being mapped using specialized software to streamline the process.

Preparations within the state are well underway, involving a massive administrative effort. Kelevituo Nisa of the Commissioner's office confirmed that training for thousands of officials, including enumerators and supervisors, has been finalized. Currently, Nagaland is organized into 17 districts and 118 sub-districts, with 6,134 personnel deployed to cover 1,606 villages and various urban centers across the state.
