Nagaland Launches Stop Diarrhoea Campaign 2026

Kohima: Nagaland officially launched the Stop Diarrhoea Campaign 2026 on June 16, initiating a statewide effort to reduce illness and mortality among children under five. Running through July 31, the campaign emphasizes the use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and Zinc supplementation while promoting better hygiene practices to combat waterborne and foodborne diseases during the monsoon season.

District officials, community leaders, and healthcare workers have mobilized across several districts to strengthen local healthcare services and raise public awareness. In Zunheboto, Deputy Commissioner Dharam Raj highlighted the importance of education in preventing infections, advising residents to prioritize safe drinking water and properly prepared food. During the launch event, he noted, "Remedies lie in our kitchens to cure and prevent diarrhoea; it is just that people are not aware of them."

Healthcare professionals are focusing on the vulnerability of children and the elderly to severe dehydration. Dr. Heto Swu, DPO (RCH and UIP), stressed that timely intervention is critical, stating, "Diarrhoea is a preventable and treatable condition. Even homemade Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) can play a crucial role in preventing dehydration and saving lives."

In other districts, including Longleng, Phek, and Wokha, the initiative is focusing on home visits by ASHA workers, the distribution of medical supplies, and the establishment of ORS-Zinc corners at health facilities. Officials are coordinating with civil society organizations and church groups to ensure the message reaches high-risk and remote areas, aiming for the ultimate goal of zero child deaths due to diarrhoeal complications.
