Kohima: Nagaland is set to become a significant player in the global Agarwood market following the approval of the Nagaland Agarwood (Conservation and Promotion) Policy, 2026. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister CL John announced the initiative during an awareness workshop held at the Forest Office Complex in Dimapur on Tuesday.

The new policy focuses on encouraging Agarwood cultivation on private and community lands to generate rural employment while preserving the endangered tree species. Minister John highlighted the plant's high economic value, noting that it is in high demand for perfumes, incense, and traditional medicine. He stated, "Nagaland's climate and land conditions, particularly in the foothill regions, are well suited for cultivating high-quality Agarwood."

Farmers in several districts have already begun cultivation to capitalize on strong international demand, especially from West Asian traders. While neighboring states like Assam and Tripura have already established themselves in the sector, the new legislative framework aims to accelerate Nagaland's progress. To support this, the forest department plans to provide technical assistance, including inoculation and processing techniques, alongside access to quality planting materials.

Minister John also addressed existing trade limitations, calling on the central government to review current export quotas for Agarwood chips and oil. He emphasized that future success will rely on partnerships with organizations such as the Rain Forest Research Institute in Jorhat to ensure the policy is implemented effectively.
