Kohima: Nagaland has officially launched preparations for the 16th Census of India, marking a shift toward a fully digital data collection process. The state has mobilized more than 6,400 personnel to manage the operation, which officials expect will shape development policies both locally and nationally.

Dr. Kenei Miachieo, director of Census Operations and Citizen Registration for Nagaland, confirmed the project aligns with India’s vision for Viksit Bharat 2047. He stated that the move to digital platforms will enhance the entire process. Describing the transition, Dr. Miachieo said, "Digital technology would improve efficiency, accuracy and transparency."

The exercise follows the Census Act of 1948 and involves a two-phase structure. The first phase, focused on house listing, will occur in Nagaland throughout July 2026, while the second phase is scheduled for February 2027. Households will have the option to use a dedicated portal for self-enumeration. Enumerators will utilize mobile applications integrated with geo-referenced maps to ensure precise data collection.

To manage the scale of the operation, the state has appointed deputy commissioners as principal census officers and assigned 157 charge officers. The workforce includes 1,060 supervisors and 5,118 enumerators tasked with covering 17 districts and 1,606 villages. Additional Deputy Commissioner Kelevituo Nisa emphasized that training programs for these personnel are currently underway and urged the public to cooperate, noting that accurate data is essential for future resource allocation.
