Kohima: Nagaland has officially launched Eliona, an AI-native supercomputing platform aimed at strengthening the state's climate resilience and disaster management capabilities. The system was inaugurated by Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, the advisor for the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), at the Nagaland Centre for Disaster Management and Atmospheric Research in Kohima.
Developed under the NSDMA, the platform is designed to shift the state's disaster management strategy from reactive responses to predictive intelligence. By integrating atmospheric science, geospatial intelligence, remote sensing, and big data analytics, the supercomputer provides advanced tools for real-time weather forecasting and climate anomaly detection.
State officials highlighted that the system will assist in high-resolution weather modelling, terrain-based hazard mapping, and disaster impact simulations. These capabilities are vital for Nagaland, where challenging terrain and heavy rainfall patterns often lead to landslides, flash floods, and seismic risks.
Beyond immediate disaster response, the platform supports long-term initiatives such as urban resilience planning, parametric insurance, and disaster risk financing. Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen and Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha noted that the technology marks a significant milestone in evidence-based governance, ensuring the state is better prepared to protect its residents through data-driven planning and early warning systems.
