Kohima: Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor for Industries and Commerce, recently stated that the future of Nagaland depends on the success of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. During an interactive session in Kohima regarding the UNNATI 2024 scheme and PM Vishwakarma, she described these businesses as the foundation for local development and job creation. Jakhalu emphasized that establishing these enterprises effectively could resolve the majority of economic challenges facing the state.

To support this growth, the department is actively promoting several government initiatives, including the World Bank-assisted RAMP program. This project aims to mentor 750 high-potential businesses, and officials are asking legislators to help identify genuine local entrepreneurs who can act as role models. The state is also prioritizing the food processing sector along with traditional handloom and handicraft industries. Jakhalu encouraged weavers to apply for government-supported sheds to help improve their skills and access better resources.

Industries and Commerce Secretary Kumar Ramnikant noted that these schemes serve as a vital link between traditional heritage and the modern economy. He reported that 1,939 artisans have received training under the PM Vishwakarma initiative as of May 25, 2026. With 55 units already established under the UNNATI framework, officials are calling for a collective effort from local leaders to ensure these programs reach every corner of the state to build a more vibrant economy.
