Nagaland Cracks Down on Illegal High Security License Plates

Kohima: Nagaland is tightening the screws on vehicle registration. The state Transport Department issued a mandate requiring all motor vehicles to display High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs). It is time to get compliant. This push follows a direct order from the Supreme Court in the M.C. Mehta vs Union of India case.

Authorities want full adherence to federal guidelines. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways ordered that plates must come from government-approved manufacturers. These suppliers need valid type approval from the Central Road Research Institute or other authorized agencies. Dealers cannot skip the paperwork.

The department warned dealers against fixing plates without official authorization or failing to log entries in the VAHAN database. Enforcement officers have orders to verify every plate on the road. Penalties are coming for those who ignore the law. The notification states: "vehicle owners and HSRP manufacturers found violating the provisions would be liable for penalties under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988."
