Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has officially welcomed the Election Commission of India's recognition of the merger between the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and the Naga People's Front. Describing the development as a historic moment, Rio declared it the beginning of a golden period for the unified party during a ticket distribution ceremony for upcoming town council by-elections.

The merger process concluded earlier this month when the Election Commission formally recognized the Naga People's Front as the sole entity, effectively ending the separate existence of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party. The two parties had originally agreed to the move in October, bringing together the former party's 32 legislators and the two existing Naga People's Front members.

Reflecting on his return to what he considers his original political home, Rio expressed his comfort in the transition. He emphasized that the party serves as the primary custodian of Naga rights and identity, urging his colleagues to prioritize public interest over personal ambition. He also reminded members that the party constitution requires a dedicated commitment to serving the people with discipline and sincerity.

Secretary General and MLA Achumbemü Kikün confirmed that all legal and administrative formalities regarding the merger are now complete. During the event, the party introduced three candidates for the upcoming urban local body by-elections: Neichüü Kuotsü for Chümoukedima Town, Shikavi Kiba for Atoizu Town, and Aling Lotha for Wokha Town. The candidates were formally sworn in by Working President Pusazo Luruo.
