Imphal: The Naga Students’ Federation has issued a firm warning against forcing educational institutions to observe International Yoga Day. The student body recently wrote to the Nagaland Chief Secretary to contest a directive from the Directorate of School Education that mandates participation in the event.
The federation argues that the state government is infringing upon the rights and personal convictions of students and staff. Addressing the postponement of the event, the group stated: "The postponement of the event does not address the fundamental concerns raised by the Federation. The issue remains one of compulsion, imposition, and the infringement of the rights and convictions of students, teachers, and educational institutions."
While acknowledging the physical benefits of yoga, the organization maintains that the practice carries religious and philosophical associations that conflict with Naga traditions. The federation has instructed its units to monitor schools for any signs of coercion. They warned that any attempt by authorities to force attendance would lead to democratic action.
The group is now demanding an official circular from the state government confirming that the June 22 observance is entirely voluntary. They insist that no teacher or student should face administrative pressure or consequences for choosing not to participate in the programme.
