MP Bimol Akoijam Criticizes Manipur Government Over Naga Civilians' Deaths

Imphal: Inner Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam has accused the state government of fostering a climate of impunity following the abduction and killing of six Liangmei Naga civilians. The victims were targeted at Lielon Vaiphei village in the Kangpokpi district by suspected armed militants.

During a meeting with the families of the victims and survivors, Akoijam argued that the administration has failed to act decisively despite reports that survivors identified those involved. Three women who survived the abduction are receiving treatment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal for severe trauma. These survivors have made troubling allegations about their treatment while in captivity, though authorities have yet to verify these claims.

Addressing the gathering, the MP emphasized that the government carries a heavy burden for failing to protect its citizens. He stated, "The government may not have directly committed the crime, but if it allows such atrocities to occur without taking appropriate action against those responsible, it cannot absolve itself of responsibility."

Akoijam contended that the lack of visible law enforcement has compounded the suffering of the affected families and raised broader concerns regarding public safety. He has pledged to bring this issue to the national level during the upcoming session of Parliament. Furthermore, he is demanding a thorough and time-bound investigation into the incident to ensure justice for the victims.
