Shillong: Relentless monsoon rains pounded South West Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills this week, triggering landslides and leaving infrastructure in tatters. Mud and rock blocked key transit routes, stalling traffic across the region.
In South West Garo Hills, landslides hammered the Silkona-Tikrikilla Road and the Lokaichar-Kalaipara Road. Similar damage hit the Garobadha-Dalu Road near the 52-kilometer mark and the Purakhasia-Dalu route. Crews cleared enough debris to open parts of the road, but full repairs must wait for the water to drop and the skies to clear.
District officials confirmed no deaths or crop losses. The District Disaster Management Authority is keeping its control room running 24/7 to manage the fallout. Authorities urged locals to stay alert, noting, "Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and immediately report flooding, landslides, road blockages or other emergencies to district authorities."
In South West Khasi Hills, the weather claimed a retaining wall at Mariem Presbyterian Church for the second time in three weeks. The collapse on July 8 wrecked a poultry house owned by Batskhem Thongni. While minor landslides continue to haunt the area, crews are working to restore order to the broken districts.
