Aizawl: The Mizoram government has launched a series of austerity and fuel-saving measures in response to the ongoing crisis in West Asia. These steps align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for states to prioritize economical spending and reduce fuel consumption.
A primary feature of the plan is the introduction of a weekly No Official Vehicle Day every Wednesday. On these days, government employees are encouraged to commute by walking or utilizing public transport. Additionally, the state has directed all departments to transition 20 percent of their staff to work-from-home arrangements. This policy excludes essential sectors like healthcare, law enforcement, disaster management, and public utility services.
To manage traffic congestion and energy use, the government has implemented staggered office hours. One group of 20 departments will operate from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, while another 20 departments, including health and home, will run from 10:30 am to 6 pm. Officials are now required to prioritize video conferencing over physical meetings and limit both domestic and international travel.
The state has also issued directives to cut non-essential costs, including a reduction in the size of official vehicle convoys and the cancellation of celebratory programs. Departments must ensure strict energy efficiency by powering down electrical appliances after hours and limiting air conditioning use. These financial and operational adjustments aim to curb rising costs and reduce the state’s carbon footprint.
