Aizawl: Mizoram lost 1,291.11 crore to disasters and disease outbreaks between 2021 and 2025. A Post Disaster Needs Assessment report confirmed the figure during a State Disaster Management Authority meeting held June 25. Chief Minister Lalduhoma led the session.
Physical damage accounted for 656.76 crore of the total. Economic fallout stripped away another 634.35 crore. Cyclone Remal, African Swine Fever, landslides, and rodent infestations drove these steep losses. Recovering and rebuilding will cost an estimated 879.82 crore.
Officials reviewed the draft Mizoram State Disaster Management Plan 2026. They also looked over plans from all eleven districts. These measures aim to build better defenses against future threats. The authority greenlit 178 projects under the Recovery and Reconstruction Fund for 2024-25, totaling 11.44 crore.
The state wants to treat African Swine Fever as a specific disaster. This change would allow the use of the State Disaster Response Fund for farmers without strict time limits. According to official sources, the objective is to "ensure effective implementation of disaster-risk reduction measures across the state." Leaders also discussed buying more search and rescue gear to sharpen emergency responses.
