Aizawl: Mizoram has officially been declared an insurgency-free state following a landmark ceremony where the final active insurgent group, a faction of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) led by Lalhmingthanga Sanate, formally surrendered their weapons. The event took place in Sesawng, near Aizawl, where 43 cadres laid down their arms, effectively concluding a long-standing period of regional unrest.
This surrender follows a peace agreement signed between the Mizoram government and the Sanate-led faction on April 14, 2026, in Sakawrdaia. The group, which had previously sought an autonomous district council under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, had remained largely dormant but was occasionally linked to sporadic criminal activity. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Lalduhoma praised the cadres for their courage, noting that their decision signifies a commitment to the greater good of the Mizo people.
Highlighting the significance of the moment, the Chief Minister underscored the necessity of unity and a shared Mizo identity to ensure future prosperity. Drawing on his own background as a former mediator during the historic Mizo National Front secessionist movement, he emphasized that Mizoram no longer has space for insurgency and urged citizens to avoid ideologies that incite conflict. He further commended his government's persistent efforts in facilitating these peaceful negotiations.
