Aizawl: Mizoram officials bought over 2 lakh quintals of ginger from local growers this year. Agriculture Minister PC Vanlalruata confirmed the figures in the state Assembly on August 25. He stated that the government processed 2,00,481.55 quintals of ginger by August 18.
The state operates this program under the Bana Kaih scheme. This initiative, also known as Handholding, covers ginger, turmeric, chilli, broomsticks, and paddy. The government released Rs 51.13 crore for ginger support prices this year. Total spending on ginger under the scheme reached Rs 192.63 crore for 2025 and 2026. This includes a 2025 payment of Rs 141.50 crore.
Vanlalruata reported that all payments are current. Money flows into the DAMC account before hitting individual bank accounts. "There were no pending support-price payments from the government," Vanlalruata said. The Zoram People's Movement-led government launched the scheme in September 2024. They aimed to secure farm livelihoods through fixed prices.
Mizoram remains a major hub for the spice. NITI Aayog named the state the "Ginger Capital of India" in 2025. Officials have set aside Rs 350 crore for the Bana Kaih scheme for the 2026-27 financial year. Of that total, Rs 150 crore is set aside strictly for crop procurement.
