Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has called on the central government to increase the funding limits for Externally Aided Projects across the Northeast. Speaking at a workshop in Shillong hosted by the Union Ministry of Finance, he argued that expanded access to international financing is vital for regional infrastructure and socio-economic progress.
The event, inaugurated by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, gathered regional leaders and global development partners to refine how these projects are managed. Lalduhoma highlighted Mizoram as a success story, noting how international partnerships provide both essential capital and professional technical expertise.
Mizoram has effectively utilized these funds to modernize public services. The Chief Minister pointed to the FOCUS Project, which is supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development. He noted, "The project has helped increase household incomes by around 43 per cent while simultaneously promoting sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation."
Healthcare has also seen significant upgrades. A World Bank-assisted initiative helped 62 government hospitals secure National Quality Assurance Standards certification, a major improvement from a point where the state held none. Other notable collaborations include a JICA-backed cancer center, Asian Development Bank support for universal healthcare, and the revival of the Tuirini hydroelectric project through the New Development Bank.
Lalduhoma emphasized that these projects act as a critical instrument for overcoming the region's unique geographical hurdles. By raising borrowing limits, he believes Northeastern states can better address developmental gaps and foster sustainable growth.
