Aizawl: The Mizoram State Agriculture, Horticulture and Marketing Cooperative Federation (MAHFED) has launched a formal investigation into the unauthorized and overpriced sale of urea in the areas surrounding Sihphir, Aizawl. Following detailed field inspections conducted on March 20 and March 23, 2026, authorities confirmed that subsidized urea, which is officially priced at ₹266.40 per 45 kg bag inclusive of GST, was being sold to local farmers at rates reaching as high as ₹450.
Investigations identified an unregistered private entity, M/s Zekly Enterprises, as a central actor in these illicit activities. The firm was found to be sourcing and distributing urea through irregular, extra-legal channels without obtaining the mandatory Certificate of Registration required under the Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985. MAHFED has already issued formal show-cause notices and is pursuing legal proceedings against the entity to curb these unauthorized operations.
MAHFED officials classified these actions as a direct violation of Clause 3(3) of the Fertilizer (Control) Order, 1985, noting that such offenses are subject to strict penal action under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The Government of Mizoram maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding the exploitation of agricultural inputs, emphasizing that these practices not only undermine established regulatory frameworks but also inflict significant financial harm on the farming community by distorting essential welfare measures.
