Shillong: The Meghalaya government is expanding its post-rehabilitation support by launching vocational training programs for individuals recovering from substance abuse. Managed by the Drug Reduction Elimination and Action Mission, the initiative aims to provide recovering patients with practical skills to foster self-reliance and dignity as they reintegrate into society.

A recent success under this program saw 15 patients from the New Hope De-addiction Centre in Shillong complete a one-month basic furniture technician course on May 20. Upon finishing their training, each participant received an official certificate. To ensure these individuals can start working independently after leaving the facility, the government will also provide them with specialized toolkits.

This effort is the result of a partnership between the state government and the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society, formalized through a recent memorandum of understanding. The current training is part of a broader two-year initiative designed to boost employability and reduce the risk of relapse by offering meaningful economic opportunities.

Officials stated that the mission plans to scale these programs across rehabilitation centers throughout the state. By providing hands-on experience and the necessary equipment, the government hopes to empower individuals to build productive, independent lives free from external financial dependency.
