Shillong: The Meghalaya government has announced a major tourism expansion project centered in New Shillong. The initiative features a proposed 123-metre-tall monolith tower costing Rs 450 crore. Once completed, the structure will stand as the second-tallest public monument in India, following the Statue of Unity.

Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira introduced the plan during a June 17 consultative workshop. He described the development as a foundational change for the state, noting that the initiative marks a "pivotal shift" in the state's tourism strategy. To manage this growth, the government will establish a Destination Management Organisation tasked with coordinating inter-departmental efforts.

The broader vision for the zone includes a luxury resort, a convention centre, and various entertainment facilities, such as skywalks and theme parks. Officials intend to integrate local culture into these sites while improving infrastructure like water, power, and connectivity to support the current 18 lakh annual visitors. Minister Shira emphasized that the state remains committed to balance, stating, "Tourism must not come at the cost of our environment or our cultural identity. Instead, it should strengthen both."

Commissioner and Secretary of Tourism Rosetta Mary Kurbah stated that the long-term goal is to increase international arrivals and encourage visitors to stay longer in the region. The state is also evaluating similar development strategies to transform Umiam into a world-class destination as part of an effort to bolster the local economy.
