Shillong: Meghalaya is set to host the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition (NEIINFRA) in Shillong on June 11 and 12. The two-day event, organized by the Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region in collaboration with multiple Union ministries, will convene policymakers, investors, financial institutions, and industry leaders to explore strategies for regional connectivity and infrastructure expansion.
During the event's curtain raiser, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized that the region is entering a phase of rapid economic expansion. He attributed this progress to newfound political stability, firm leadership, and consistent policy implementation at both the state and central levels. Sangma noted that Meghalaya's economy has doubled in the past five years, with capital investment increasing fourfold since 2018. He credited this growth to a strong industrial promotion policy and a burgeoning startup ecosystem, highlighting that the state's first IT park is currently operating at full capacity, with significant interest already surrounding the development of a second facility.
Sanjay Jaju, Secretary at the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, reaffirmed the central government's commitment to the area, which he described as the Ashtalakshmi or eight treasures of India. He announced that the Centre has allocated a record Rs 1 lakh crore for regional development this year. Jaju urged private entrepreneurs to partner with the government to translate this massive public investment into sustainable business growth. As northeastern states work to establish themselves as a major economic and trade hub, the upcoming summit will focus on transport networks, urban infrastructure, and digital connectivity to further accelerate this growth trajectory.
