Shillong: Meghalaya has implemented strict new regulations governing the use of designation boards on government and official vehicles. The Display of Name Boards on Motor Vehicles Regulations, 2026, which took effect June 1, mandates that only specific constitutional and administrative authorities may display such plates.

The Transport department now requires all approved boards to follow a uniform design, featuring white or golden lettering on a red background. University officials, including vice chancellors and registrars, are the only exceptions, as they must use light blue plates with white text. All boards must be fixed to the front and rear of the vehicle, separate from the official registration plate.

A primary focus of the new policy is the requirement that designation boards be removed or covered when the authorized official is not inside the vehicle. The regulation states, "No motor vehicle other than those specified below, in the manner described against each such vehicle, shall exhibit any boards showing the name of the government or the government department or the designation of the dignitaries/officer(s) using it without permission of the government, viz., Transport department."

The list of authorized users includes the Governor, the Chief Minister, state ministers, High Court judges, police officials, and district administrators. The notification clarifies that displaying a board does not confer special road privileges. Furthermore, the rules do not permit the use of tinted glass, sirens, or flashing lights, which remain regulated under existing police department orders. A committee led by the Chief Secretary will oversee any future amendments to these rules.
