Shillong: Educators from Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district recently completed a specialized training program focused on Environmental and Sustainability Education. Held on June 4 at the District Rural Development Agency in Williamnagar, the workshop aimed to equip teachers with practical methods to integrate sustainability into their classrooms and encourage eco-friendly practices within their local communities.
The initiative was a collaborative effort between the non-profit Aaranyak and the State Council of Science, Technology and Environment, Meghalaya, with additional support from the District School Education Officer and Wipro Earthian. This program served as a professional development opportunity designed to meet the goals of the National Education Policy 2020.
During the event, Samuel Sangma of the East Garo Hills District School Education Office addressed the twenty-four attendees. He stated, “Teachers should encourage students to practice science suitably in daily life.”
Sessions during the workshop included an overview of biodiversity conservation and interactive discussions on water and waste management. Project officers from Aaranyak led these sessions to help teachers mentor students for future sustainability projects. The event concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participants, marking a step forward in promoting environmental literacy across the region.
