Meghalaya struggles to open Polo Shopping Mall one year after launch

Shillong: Nearly a year after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the 100-crore Polo Shopping Mall, the facility remains locked and non-functional. The Meghalaya government continues to face significant hurdles in leasing the space to operators, resulting in several failed attempts to open the complex to the public.

Authorities recently invited new tenders for the site, though the process has faced delays due to frequent amendments in the bidding documents. Government officials previously identified high rental rates as the primary reason for the lack of interest from potential tenants. In response, the state is expected to lower its rental requirements to encourage new bids.

While the Polo project remains stalled, construction on the Tourism-cum-Business Centre at Police Bazar is approaching completion. Officials stated that a final operational model for that facility will be determined once the building work concludes.
